Get involved with Your union

There are many ways that you can get involved! AEA hosts social events throughout the year including happy hour gatherings, bowling and paint nights, and our annual Day of the Teacher party. Check the calendar for this year’s dates.
You can also get involved in one of our committees or get
elected to be a Site Representative.

Executive Board

AEA President – Valorie Luke
As President of AEA, I’m here to help you any way I can. It is my responsibility to work toward, and ensure, an atmosphere in the AUSD that allows you to be the very best educator you can be. Those efforts fall into 2 major areas: (1) Enforcement of the Contract: primarily in the arenas of communication, crisis intervention, ensuring professional and personal rights, and accessing whatever resources necessary to ensure the above; and (2) Enhancing the Contract: with the underlying premise of the greatest good for the greatest number of bargaining unit members.
The AEA President is responsible for chairing monthly Executive Board and Rep Council meetings as well as representing the bargaining unit members as the spokesperson for the Union.

AEA Vice President – Sara Nevé
The vice president of AEA attends all representative council meetings, all executive board meetings, and any other meetings as deemed necessary by the president. The vice president performs any duties assigned by the president. The vice president also assumes the role of the president — temporarily — should the president be unavailable to serve for an extended period of time.

AEA Treasurer – Deb Hubbard
The treasurer is the financial representative for AEA. Job responsibilities include the following:
1. Exercise general supervision over the receipt and disbursement of all AEA’s funds.
2. Have official custody of all funds and property of AEA.
3. Supervise and prepare the annual budget and periodic financial reports, and the preparation and distribution of the annual financial report.
4. Prepare financial papers for the annual audit.
5. Attend monthly Executive Board meetings and monthly Rep Council meetings.
 AEA Secretary – Jill Cooper
The association secretary is a voting member of the AEA Executive Board. The secretary takes the minutes at both the Executive Board meetings and at the Representative Council meetings.

Elementary Schools’ Liaison – Monica Cannady
Elementary Schools’ Liaison – Ken Kent
Middle Schools’ Liaison – Tim Hooke
High Schools’ Liaison – Jessika Tate

Since the AEA President cannot directly address the questions and concerns of every member or representative in a timely fashion the liaison position was created to provide support. Members are encouraged to first consult their contract either in hard copy or on our union website. If the issue is not resolved through a contract read, members should then seek out guidance from their individual site representative member(s). Ultimately, if the issue can’t be resolved at that level, it then becomes the liaison’s responsibility to become involved. The liaisons will work directly with the AEA President, Executive Board, and/or CTA staff to promptly achieve a satisfactory solution to their problems. The liaison serves as a voting member of the Executive Board and is required to attend all Executive Board and Representative Council meetings.

State Council Representatives –
Valorie Luke & Jessica Weston

CTA’s top policy-making body is the State Council of Education. Meeting four times a year, the council’s nearly 800 delegates elect the three state-level CTA officers and the CTA Board of Directors. Council also sets forth CTA policy, develops legislation, and makes recommendations in general elections.
If there is an issue that you would like to see addressed at the state level, contact your state council representatives.
As members of the AEA Executive Board, the state council Reps are required to attend monthly Executive Board and Rep Council meetings.
